Barron wasn’t the only one who thinks Trump should apologize. Lots of Catholics, and others, including the President of of Iran?? were horrified and offended that he would say and share such things.
Not me! I don’t care. It’s all dumb and ridiculous and yes, I guess it’s offensive, although my capacity to be offended has been worn down to a mere grease spot these days.
What I do care about is why this, a stupid little social media post calling names and being dumb, is what finally stirred Bishop Barron out of his long, comfortable slumber and spurred him to make a statement (sandwiched in between some bootlicking). This? This is what finally gave his conscience a little twinge?
The Pope doesn’t want or need an apology for the president being disrespectful, I guarantee you. It’s the kind of thing Trump posts all the time, and always has. It doesn’t matter.
What does matter is what Trump DOES.

I’m afraid the Bishop is a lost cause, seduced by the passing winds of temporary fame and closeness to worldly power. It’s so sad to see. But I knew this when he made that post about Charlie Kirk being a hero. It’s not ok to celebrate someone’s violent death, but it’s also NOT ok to valorize someone who used his platform to spread hate and division.
It’s insane just the sheer magnitude of what Trump has gotten away with it. The things you listed aren’t even close to the sum total! The way his name appears over a million times in the Epstein files (not an exaggeration, this was said by a congressman who was given access to the unredacted version of the files), the way he’s pardoned actual criminals and accepted bribes and used the office of president to line his own pockets.
And mind you it’s been less than a year and a half into his term!

I am not a practicing Catholic, but I can’t help but find myself moved by the stances the Church is taking right now, just as I can’t help but find myself sickened by Trump’s rants and policies — which are still too much to take in.
I know that some Christians (including some Catholics) have expressed notions about Trump being empowered by God. There’s so many reasons I can’t take that literally. On the other hand, I find that Trump’s antics and his cruelties are driving me to take my responsibility as a citizen and member of civil society more seriously. I also find myself coding a lot of impressions in religious (Catholic tinged) terms. At a protest this Saturday, I was discussing die hard Trump supporters with an avowed Christian. I heard myself (sincerely?) saying that I did not hate them, and that they were among the types of people that the Jesus of the Gospels wanted to reach out to. (But I never did feel like I understood what was mean by “poor in spirit” in that one Gospel, either) I also said that while I didn’t hate aggressive Trumpers, I don’t have to passively put up with any of their shit talk either.
Writing this prompted me to quiz ChatGPT about the meaning of “poor in spirit.” It insisted that the phrase referred to those, who through (or despite) suffering and deprivation, cultivate a deeper sense of empathy. And it traced some of the usage of the Hebrew term “anawim” as it is used in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Matthew used “ptōchoi tō pneumati (πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι)” — but the machine insists that this was a Greek translation of the Hebrew “anawim” with its long train of commentary and context. The human reality is that suffering and deprivation are just as (if not more) likely to stifle empathy, humility, and even curiosity. I wonder what Jesus would say?
